Fear is a natural human emotion, and as we read this sweet storybook, we learn that animals share some of our fears. While we eventually find out what Hugh (cow), Morris (horse), and Ralph (dog) fear, this story mainly focuses on what gives Sadie (the orange cat) and Chica (chicken) a fright and how friends are always there to help you to weather any storm.
The sound of rain can soothe a body and mind. It lowers stress hormones, reduces anxiety levels, and helps individuals fall asleep faster. It can also help a person stay asleep. Chica Chicken was lulled to sleep by the tap, tap, tap of the rain on the rooftop. They didn't have a care in the world until the barn doors suddenly flew open, and all her barnyard friends came rushing in. Chica discovered that all the animals were spooked by the raging winds, heavy rains, and the prospect of the storm gaining traction. A common fear shared by many young readers and adults during storm season!
When storms arrive, many animals hide from the thunder and lightning, and that's precisely what Sadie did. They bolted from the barn and out into the storm. Though Chica was scared, her first instinct was to help her friend. She wanted Sadie back with the group. Chica tried to lure Sadie out of hiding by singing her favorite tune, telling jokes, and juggling eggs. While it did not persuade Sadie out of hiding, it did help the other animals forget what was happening outside. She eased their fears!
Chica faced her fear one more time as she left the barn and went out into the storm in search of Sadie. She was a brave chicken and a good friend.
I enjoyed the children's book very much. The illustrations were hilarious! I laughed at the image of Chica hugging a clearly freaked-out Sadie. The feline's eyes spoke volumes! I also liked the expression on Chica's face as they juggled eggs and the duo having a grand time playing in a big puddle.
I did notice a couple of inconsistencies: how names were presented and the spacing between lines. Besides those two minor missteps, this is a story families and students will love listening to or reading by themselves.
Amazon's recommended reading age is 3-7 years.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, Goodreads, and X (formerly Twitter.) Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
