Overview
I'm an interior book designer with experience working for several trade publishing houses. I have designed interiors for authors such as Veronica Roth, Paul Theroux, Howard Norman, & Ursula Le Guin. My specialities are science fiction and fantasy, suspense, and memoir, though I'm game to design and typeset almost any narrative book. I'm also comfortable placing run-in art and handling basic photo editing.
I love to work with clients on multiple projects, building a "brand" with their book interiors, and over just the course the last year have had many clients return to me with subsequent manuscripts. I have 7 years experience with book design. Prior to beginning work as a designer, I worked in an editorial department for four and a half years.
My passion for books, however, is lifelong. I’ve been writing stories since childhood and still work on my own fiction, with my first YA novel published in 2023. I have my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I’d like to think this drive to be a writer in addition to a book designer is what makes me well-suited to design your book: because I get it. Your book is your baby. You want it to read like the book you always dreamed of. I read everything I design, and so am able to capture a book’s unique personality, bringing life to your pages.
Testimonials
"My experience working with Emily far exceeded my expectations. She showed me utmost respect, as well as for my writing, which I’ve come to find is a rare quality in book publishing. . . . Emily is a true professional whose creative gift for book design turned my manuscript into a beautiful novel. She was a pleasure to work with, kept me updated every step of the way, and always included my vision in the design process. I would highly recommend Emily for your book design project. I’m glad I did." -Susan R, romance novelist
"Emily is a fantastic to work with. A great collaborator who explains in detail her work, needs, and expectations. And she delivers on time or early. Very thorough and totally a fair player--even when she probably got more work from me than she bargained for. Above all else, Emily's quality at delivering what was asked was just great." -Warren B, sci-fi novelist
"Emily is efficient and knowledgeable, with excellent communication skills. Quite simply, she exceeds expectations, and it is a joy to work with her!" -Sharon S, sci-fi novelist

Work experience
Self-employed
Starting in June 2022, I decided to step away from trade publishing and pursue the freedom of scheduling and choice of projects that working solely as a freelancer designer affords. I design covers and interiors for my clients, creating print-ready PDFs and reflowable ePubs.
HarperCollins Publishers
I designed beautiful book interiors for authors such as Veronica Roth, Ursula Le Guin, Paul Theroux, Ian O’Connor, Howard Norman, and Derek Miller.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
I designed and typeset interiors for adult general interest, YA, and lifestyle titles.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
I worked in the reference, nature, and field guides editorial department, working my way from editorial assistant to Assistant Editor over the course of 4.5 years. I worked on dictionaries, the Peterson Field Guide series, and select narrative nonfiction nature titles.
