Emma Driver

Emma Driver – Editor

Non-fiction editor with 20+ years’ experience in non-fiction books and texts – from music biographies to memoirs to how-to guides.

Overview

Are you working on a non-fiction project? If you’re looking for an editor for a factual text – whether it’s memoir, biography, history, comic musings, instructional text, general non-fiction, art monograph or anything else – I’ll be very happy to discuss your work with you.

—> What can I do for you?

• Structural and development editing

• Copy editing

• Writing and rewriting

I can also help with research, converting text to British/Australian or American English, formatting text for designers, fact-checking, and managing endnotes and references in a range of formats.

Currently I’m not taking on proofreading jobs.

—> What kinds of subjects?

I’m especially interested in areas like music, comedy, literature, history, art, First Nations cultures and histories, birds and wildlife, psychology, popular science, food, education, the law, health, politics and current affairs.

I’ve worked on books by a wide range of authors including:

• Professor Kerryn Phelps, Australian former politician, doctor and activist

• Jeff Apter, music biographer

• Conor Woodman, UK TV presenter and true crime writer

• Melissa Doyle, TV presenter, and Naima Brown, producer and writer

• Professor Clive Hamilton, public intellectual

• Professor Inger Mewburn, ‘The Thesis Whisperer’

• Dr Terri Janke, Indigenous (Wuthathi/Meriam) lawyer

• Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, Plastic Free July founder

• Alison Pouliot, photographer and ecologist

• Anthony Ham, photographer and travel writer

• John Smailes, motor-racing journalist.

—> How will I communicate?

Respectfully! When there is respect on both sides of an editor–author relationship, everyone gets the best results. I want to help writers craft or polish their text for the audience they have in mind, and for the purpose they intend it.

—> Other details

I’m a professional member of Australia’s Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd). My fees are calculated in Australian dollars (AUD).

Before freelancing, I worked in legal publishing (Butterworth/LexisNexis Australia), then in educational publishing, working on books from preschool level through to tertiary textbooks.

I have a particular interest in anything to do with music or comedy, and I subedit and write regularly for the Australian print magazine Women In Pop.

Emma is very professional and focused on getting the job done to a high standard. The work on my book was detailed, and gave a new sense of order and clarity to the text. I found Emma very easy to work with and felt well supported throughout the editorial process which for a novice writer, was a huge help.
