Helena Neufeld

Helena Neufeld – Editor

Nonfiction editor with indie in-house experience. Focused on social justice, art and design, and LGBTQ+ topics. Collaborative and curious.

Overview

EXPERIENCE

I worked as a developmental editor for 4 years at an indie house and guided authors all throughout the publishing process. This included structuring and developing the manuscript, line edits, working through design ideas, and proofreading. I mainly focused on nonfiction titles, especially on the topics of art and design, pop culture, history, regional photography, and craft. I love diving into new topics and immersing myself in a project along with the author--developmental editing is a highly collaborative process, and I value each individual project's specific vision and style.

PROCESS

I offer a range of editing services, from in-depth and more intense developmental editing to a later-stage proofread. I am most familiar with CMOS, but have worked with other styles and can adjust as needed per project. I strive for clarity, consistency, and readability in the work I edit, and believe in the value of maintaining the author's specific style at the same time. I have experience with both Microsoft Word track changes and Adobe programs such as InDesign and Acrobat.

TOPICS

I have the most experience and interest in the humanities and social sciences, but I am open and curious about other topics, as well. Social justice, cultural studies, and feminist and LGBTQ topics are especially in my wheelhouse.

ON CONSCIOUS LANGUAGE

I value conscious language and engaging critically in conversations surrounding word choice, framing, and representation in the written word. While there are very few one-size-fits-all answers to these questions, I aim to approach each project with mindfulness, respect, and a willingness to learn.

Helena produced a very thorough, detailed and professional proofread of my complex, technical non-fiction book. Her proofread was more detailed than I expected and required quite a bit of work for me and my Reedsy internal designer to evaluate and implement the edits. The overall result turned out very well, but I think it would have been helpful if we both would have communicated better about...
