Margherita Barrera

Margherita Barrera – Designer

Experienced freelance illustrator with a sense of humor. My style is full of rich color, textures, bold expressive shapes and hand-lettering

Overview

Hello there, my name is Margherita!

I’m a freelance illustrator and graphic designer currently living and working in Rome. I worked as a designer for creative agencies, film festivals and institutions, while always maintaining an independent career as a freelance illustrator and, recently, animator.

Alternating freelance work and agency work allowed me to get the best of both worlds, creative freedom and the joy of collaborating with fellow humans.

I have a particular love for color and bold shapes, I enjoy working in a more expressionistic style, both in traditional and digital mediums. I am very fond of bizarre and whimsical stories and those influence my imagination the most.

That said, I do like to really get into the mood of the project experimenting with different styles, I approach every new project as an open dialogue: it's a bit of a cliché but good communication really is the most important aspect in a successful collaboration.

Sometimes it's important to stay on top of commercial trends to make sure your book will be read by as many people as possible, sometimes a weirder approach will do your weird book justice!

That's why my priority is to make sure we're on the same page at all times, from general ideas and drafts to the minute technical details: we'll team up and share the journey!

Work experience

May, 2014 — Present

In the many years as a designer I worked with agencies, both in Italy and in Germany, with private companies and institutions. I designed and implemented so many different projects: from websites and applications to branding. I produced print materials for various editions of the Rome International Film Festival, I worked on independent discographic releases and on national institutional marketing campaigns, I even designed a whole (tiny) museum. Every medium has its language but I found that the process itself is remarkably similar: part logical problem solving, part aesthetic polish.

Over the years I had the pleasure of drawing things for print magazines (effe - Periodico di Altre Narratività, Cadillac magazine, Colla, Costola, Nurant Illustration Magazine), web magazines (Narrative.ly, The Timbre, Radiotopia’s Love+Radio), publishing houses (Caravan edizioni, Europa Editions, Edizioni e/o), ONGs (Amnesty International, Fondazione Lelio Basso, Associazione culturale Eduraduno, F.A.I.) and private companies.
Whenever I got the chance I really enjoyed participating in self-published anthologies (Lucha Libre, StudioPilar, Squame, LabA4’s Crisma, Tentacoli autoproduzioni) and art shows (Galleria Parione 9, Sacripante Art Gallery, Italianism, Saranno Illustri - Vicenza, MAIS Festival in Andria, Seiemezza - Il Sole 24 Business School).
